Agri Biotech Latam 2022

Top 10 Biotech Startups in Latin America - 2022

Top 10 Biotech Startups in Latin America - 2022

Who could have imagined non-invasive surgery with magnets, detecting breast cancer before going to the hospital, or even communicating with pre-mature babies in an incubator a few years ago? The biotech startups in Latin America have made this possible.

Despite coming up with myriad path-breaking solutions like these, Latin America has traditionally lagged in biotech development due to low government-funded R&D compared to countries like the U.S. and Israel.

However, a lot has changed today. Entrepreneurs in the life sciences are gaining traction and solving global issues in hospitals and labs across Latin America. In fact, in the past few years, private investors have invested more than double in Latin America’s pharmaceutical industry. This influx of private capital has driven the development of new medical devices, treatments, and medications that is revolutionizing healthcare in Latin America.

That being said, the upfront risk of investing in a product—that has not been tested on the market—remains the most significant challenge for biotech development today as well. Most devices and medications mandate clinical trials and tests before debuting on the market.

Biotech startups cannot grow without capital, and these companies utilize a larger part of the investment for product development as opposed to the business model. As these products undergo various phases of development and clinical trials, they can be purchased at any time. And, if they reach the final stages, the exits may run into tens of billions of dollars.

Despite these challenges, startups are taking the biotech industry by storm in Latin America as they can access top scientists and hospitals with modern technology for a fraction of the cost of a lab in the U.S.

While the risk involved in biotech investment may scare investors, the potential outcomes these startups promise could be highly lucrative and life-changing for the patients. Many startups in Latin America are on the verge of significant breakthroughs that can establish the region as the center of life science innovation across the globe.

Let us know your thoughts.
